SCOPE

The University of Haifa will be awarding an honorary doctorate to Prof. Onno J.  Boxma on June 2, 2009, for his scientific achievements and "breakthroughs in the fields of applied probability and statistics".  For full details see here.

In light of this occasion, the University of Haifa and the Technion–Israel Institute of Technology– are holding a two-day workshop on Queueing Systems and Related Topics. The workshop will feature invited lectures by international and Israeli researchers working in these areas.

 

VENUE

The workshop will take place at the University of Haifa and The Technion, as follows:

ABOUT ONNO J. BOXMA

 
 

Onno J. Boxma was born in The Hague (The Netherlands) in 1952. He is married with Jopie Boerema; they have two daughters, Lonneke and Nanette. He received his Ph.D. in 1977 from the University of Utrecht (cum laude), with J.W. Cohen as supervisor. During 1978-1979 he has been an IBM Postdoctoral Fellow. Onno has worked at the University of Utrecht (1974-1985) and CWI (1985-1998), where he led the Department of Probability, Networks and Algorithms. From 1987 until September 1998 he also was professor of Operations Research at Tilburg University. Since September 1998, Onno holds the chair of Stochastic Operations Research in Eindhoven University of Technology. In addition, he is scientific director of the European research institute EURANDOM, and he acts as one of the coordinators of its Queueing and Performance Analysis program. During the period 1/1/08 - 31/12/10, Onno Boxma is honorary professor in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences of Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.

Onno Boxma is co-author/co-editor of five books on queueing theory and performance evaluation. He serves on the editorial board of several journals, presently being editor-in-chief of Queueing Systems. He is member of IFIP WG7.3; during the period 1999-2005 he was a member of the International Advisory Board of the ITC, and during the period 2000-2004 he has served on the board of Exact Sciences of the Dutch Science Foundation. His main research interests are in queueing theory and its applications to the performance analysis of computer-communication and production systems. He has published over 150 refereed papers on these subjects.
